Betty Chu was only 9 years old when she moved to Cerritos along with her family of six. Immigrants from Taiwan, the Chu family found the perfect place to pursue a better education and life in the United States - the City of Cerritos. Ms. Chu fondly remembers her early days at Cerritos elementary school learning English as an ESL ("English as Second Language") student.
Twenty years later, Ms. Chu is now working as an Immigration Attorney at Wilner & O'Reilly, a law firm in Cerritos that specializes in Immigration and Nationality Law.
The road to Immigration Law seemed a perfect fit since Ms. Chu is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and understands the cultural and language barriers that often confront recent immigrants. As a child, she often accompanied her parents to the attorney's office regarding immigration-related matters. Today, she sits on the other side of the desk with a nameplate that makes her parents proud: "BETTY CHU, ATTORNEY AT LAW."
Ms. Chu received her Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and her Bachelor of Arts in Communications from UCLA. She previously served on the American Bar Association's (ABA) Negotiation Competitions Committee and was elected Social Chair and ABA Student Representative by her fellow classmates. Ms. Chu was also a Fellowship Recipient selected by the Southern California Chinese Lawyers' Association.
As a long-term resident of Cerritos, Ms. Chu remembers her days as a volunteer usher at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center (CPAC) and the intense months of Bar Exam studying at the Cerritos Library. "While in high school, I volunteered at the CPAC and loved the free concerts and shows that I was able to see - from The Nutcrackers and Cats to Kenny Rogers and Whitney Houston! The venue is just amazing. The Cerritos Library is also a beautiful museum-like place that I always recommend to others who are not familiar with the City. I will never forget my 10-hour sessions at the Library while studying for the Bar Exam! I only wish they would open earlier at 8am instead of 10am."
Eventually, all the hard work paid off and Ms. Chu is now living the American Dream. As an immigration attorney working in Cerritos, Ms. Chu wants to give back to the community that has given her so much. She is offering free initial consultations to friends and family of Cerritos residents now through the end of 2006.
