Associate Attorney – Fresno

Joann F. Horta-Baez is an Associate Attorney in the removal defense department of Wilner & O’Reilly, APLC’s Fresno office.  Ms. Horta is admitted to the New York state bar and the District of Columbia bar.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Master of Arts in Global Politics from the California State University, Los Angeles.

Ms. Horta received her Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.  During her time in law school, she was selected as a Diversity Fellow by the Sacramento County Bar Association and was placed with a civil business litigation firm where she gained and developed research, analytical, and writing skills.  Additionally, she competed in the Jessup International Law Moot Court Regional Competition and served as the Executive Chair for the Moot Court board.  Ms. Horta interned with the Immigration Department of the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services and participated in several immigration related weekend clinics where she assisted low-income individuals in rural areas with their immigration needs.  At graduation, Joann received the Capital Commendation for Public Service Award, given to law students who completed over 100 hours of community service.

Prior to joining Wilner & O’Reilly, Ms. Horta clerked with the Honorable Chief Judge Ronald H. Sargis of the Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of California.  For two years, she strengthened and refined her legal skills and acquired supervisory skills as she managed two to three law student externs every semester and during the summer.  Ms. Horta also clerked for the Honorable M. Casey Rodgers of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida where she worked on civil cases and assisted with criminal trials.

Away from the office, you can find Joann reading murder mysteries, spending time with her husband and three cats, and traveling to Puerto Rico or abroad.  Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Joann speaks fluent Spanish.  Due to her love of travel and history, she has studied Italian and French.
